My Story

“I don’t know anything about music.
In my line, you don’t have to” – Elvis Presley

You wouldn’t have expected a line like that from The King. But that’s exactly what music is all about; Transcending barriers, touching hearts & reaching out to millions.

Hello! I am Sanjay Paul and this is my story...

I am fortunate. Period.
Born in a business family, I set out to strike it BIG in the corporate world and also earned a Masters in engineering. But, I always had a keen ear for good music and had also taken up training in Hindustani Classical Vocals.

A Piscean by birth, I always felt a desire to do something creative and winning singing competitions at an early age encouraged me to pursue music at a higher level. Alongside my academics, I had the opportunity to learn Hindustani classical music, initially under the guidance of (Late) Pandit Vidya Shankar Joshi of the Kirana gharana and later on under the tutelage of (Late) Ustad Rahat Ali of the Patiala gharana. Therefore, great music teachers, an encouraging family and a yearning for excellence gave me the confidence to take up singing as a profession.

Today, some 30 years on, having moved residence from India to London, UK, I have been promoting various genres of Asian music like classical, ghazal, Indian film music, Indian pop, Hindustani folk, bhajan etc., in the UK as well as Europe, UAE, Canada, USA & India. Along the way, I have to my credit, a successful repertoire of about 10 music albums, some of which have achieved "Album of The Year" awards. I continue to perform in concerts regularly in UK, Europe, UAE, India as well the Canada & the USA. I am listed as a preferred artist of the Indian High Commission for all their formal functions.

I have been influenced by the likes of (Late) Mohammed Rafi, (Late) Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, (Late) Jagjit Singh, Asha Bhosle, Ghulam Ali, to name a few. I have had the good fortune of sharing the stage with some of the music luminaries like Ghulam Ali, Bhupinder Singh, Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Anup Jalota, Hari Haran, Kumar Sanu, Rajab Ali, Rafaaqat Ali Khan, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Nitin Mukesh, Anuradha Paudval, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Sadhna Sargam, Usha Uthap & Daler Mehndi to name a few.

I have now taken upon myself to promote Asian talent and provide them with a suitable platform so that the best of Asian talent can be acknowledged & appreciated by the Asian communities settled in UK, Europe, UAE, South Africa, Canada & USA.

Inpired by tradition, I invite you all to my domain.
Welcome to the realm of music.
Welcome to the world of Sanjay Paul

Genres

My Genres

A strong classical background has given me the confidence to render a Thumri, Ghazal, or Bhajan with equal ease as I would sing a film song or for that matter even a peppy Indian pop song.

Thumri

A Hindustani classical music form, where the text is usually romantic or devotional in nature. Lyrics are generally in Avedhi or Brij Bhasha. Although this form of music is now relatively less popular due to newer genres evolving. I can render various style of Thumri, yet retaining its traditional format.

Ghazal

A poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets and a refrain, within the same meter. A ghazal is a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. Through years of dedication and practise, I have mastered the art of Ghazal and can sing some 3000 ghazals, in various ragas, without reading the lyrics. I specialise in the style of (Late) Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Pankaj Udhas, Hari Haran, Pervez Mehdi, to name, but a few. I regularly perform at just over 40 ghazal concerts per year, all over the world.

Bhajan

A bhajan literally means "sharing". It also refers to any song with religious theme or spiritual ideas, in a regional Indian language. A Bhajan has no prescribed form, or set rules, is in free form, normally lyrical and based on melodic ragas. I can sing most popular bhajans sung in devotion to avatars of Vishnu such as Krishna, Rama, Vitthala and Narayana, especially the ones made popular by Pandit Purshottam Das Jalota & Anup Jalota.

Indian Folk Music

Indian folk music is diverse because of India's vast cultural diversity. It has many forms depending upon region, for example bhangra (Punjab), lavani (Maharashtra), dandiya (Gujarat) and Ghoomar (Rajasthan). The arrival of movies and pop music weakened folk music's popularity, but saints and poets used to have large musical libraries and traditions to their name, often sung in thumri, the folk music of India is dance-oriented. I regularly perform many genres of Indian folk music including – Bhajan, Ghazal, Rabindra Sangeet, Thumri, Qawwali, Sufi & Bhangra.

Indian Film Songs

More formally known as Hindi film songs, or filmi songs are songs featured in Bollywood films. Hindi film songs form a predominant component of Indian pop music, and derives its inspiration from both classical and modern sources. I regularly perform this genre on stage and can sing in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil & Gujarati, in the styles of Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mahindra Kapoor, Talat Mehmood, Kumar Shanu, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Hariharan, SP Balasubramaniyam, Suresh Wadkar, Arijit Singh, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, to name, but a few.

Indian POP Music

Indian POP Music refers to pop music originated in the South Asian region. The term refers to studio albums in contrast to filmi i.e., motion picture soundtrack music, for Indian cinema, the latter of which almost completely dominates Indian music. The private television launch in India in 1992 and onwards gave a major boost to Indi-pop music. I have released various albums in this genre, having composed my own music and produced my albums whilst working with some of the biggest names in the Indian Music Industry.
